Office 365 Groups will become Microsoft 365 Groups

From Microsoft Corporation

MC214349, Stay Informed, Published date: May 27, 2020

The Office 365 Groups platform enables collaboration across Microsoft 365. Acknowledging that scope, Office 365 Groups are becoming Microsoft 365 Groups. These changes will happen over time and will be reflected in all the connected endpoints over the upcoming quarters.

This message is associated with Microsoft 365 Roadmap ID 64336.

When this will happen

  • We’ll begin changing the appropriate UI strings for different Groups endpoints starting in end of June 2020.
  • We expect the renaming process to be complete by end of September 2020.

How this will affect your organization

In 2014, we introduced Office 365 Groups. Today, the Office 365 Groups platform supports collaboration in more than 22 applications across Microsoft 365. Our partners build custom solutions that leverage Microsoft Graph APIs and the PowerApps framework. Whether it’s a Team in Microsoft Teams, a Community in Yammer, or an Outlook Group, the Office 365 Groups platform enables users to create, share and discover knowledge and information.

This is a feature name change only. There are no functional changes.

Services and apps within Microsoft 365 and Azure that are affected by the name change include:

  • Identity – Azure Portal, MyApps Portal, Azure Active Directory (including Azure AD PowerShell)
  • Microsoft Graph
  • Microsoft 365 admin center
  • Exchange Online
  • SharePoint Online
  • Yammer
  • Microsoft Teams
  • Security center
  • Compliance center
  • Power BI admin center
  • Microsoft Stream
  • Outlook – mobile, web, and desktop
  • Microsoft Planner
  • Microsoft Project

What you need to do to prepare

If your organization has created internal documentation for provisioning or managing Office 365 Groups, you will want to update your documentation to reflect the name and any applicable string changes.
